First, let’s start with the history of coffee.

History of Coffee

Coffee beans were discovered thousands of years ago in the Ethiopian highlands. The beverage got famous due to its energizing effects & strong aroma.

In the late 17th century, coffee was introduced in my country, India by the saint Baba Budan. He planted the coffee beans in the Chandragiri Hills of Karnataka.

Is There a Need to Switch to Healthier Aspects?

As per a study, 46% of the world population love coffee. Among all the age groups, the young generation is more likely to prefer coffee over tea.

Drinking coffee helps in alertness. Black coffee improves metabolism by 7% & also helps in fat burning. A cup of coffee as a mid-meal helps in beating drowsiness.

Drinking coffee is healthy if taken in limited proportions. It can disturb our sleep if taken late in the evening.

Caffeine addiction & indigestion issues (due to acidic nature) are the cons of having excess coffee. It is advisable not to have more than 2–3 cups of coffee a day.

And Yes! we can explore & switch to healthier options of coffee.

Healthier Alternatives of Coffee Powder

I. Chickpea Coffee Powder

Ingredients — Chickpeas, Jaggery powder, Milk

Recipe — Dry roast the white chickpeas till it becomes dark brown in color. Cool & blend them in a mixer to a fine powder. This powder will give the same aroma & color as coffee powder. You can make this chickpea power & store it for future uses.

For making coffee, add the required amount of chickpea powder, jaggery powder in milk. Boil this mix to have a hot beverage. For cold coffee, add ice cubes in the mix & blend.

II. Wheat Coffee Powder

Ingredients — Wheat kernels, coriander seeds, milk, sugar/jaggery

Recipe — Dry roast wheat kernels in a pan on medium flame till these turn brown. Same way, dry roast the coriander seeds too. Cool both of them and combine. Grind them to a fine powder. You can store this powder mix in an airtight jar for further use. Instead of wheat, you can also use ragi.

Use the prepared powder instead of coffee powder. Add the powder, sugar in boiled milk & have your coffee!

Healthier Alternatives of Milk & Sweetener

Instead of White Sugar — You can use Jaggery Powder, Desi Khand, Brown Sugar, Coconut Sugar, Honey.

Instead of Dairy Milk — You can use Almond milk, Coconut Milk & Peanut Milk.

Other Healthier Varieties of Coffee

I. Satvik Coffee

Ingredients — Fenugreek (methi) seeds, milk, sugar/jaggery

Recipe — Start dry roasting methi seeds till the color changes to dark brown. Caramelize the brown sugar. Add milk to the caramelized sugar & after one boil, add roasted methi seeds. After two boils, sieve to have your healthy & tasty satvic coffee.

II. Sukku Coffee

Ingredients — Ginger, coriander seeds, sugar/jaggery

Recipe — Add slightly crushed ginger pieces & coriander seeds to the boiled water on a low flame. After 3–4 minutes, remove the heat & sieve. Add jaggery powder. Stir to have your Sukku Coffee.
